What is IEC (Importer Exporter Code)?

By the Import Export Advisor advisory teamLast updated

An IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is the 10-character code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade that an Indian business must hold to import or export goods. The IEC number is the same as the business PAN, it does not expire, and it must be updated every year between 1 April and 30 June.

Where is the IEC used?

The IEC is quoted on every shipping bill and bill of entry, on foreign trade bank transactions, and on applications for AD Code, ICEGATE, RCMC and incentive schemes.

How do you get an IEC?

Apply on the DGFT portal with the business PAN, address proof and bank proof, and pay the ₹500 fee. See the IEC registration guide or our IEC service.
