How to get an IEC code online: steps, documents and fees

By the Import Export Advisor advisory teamLast updated

You apply for an IEC on the DGFT website (dgft.gov.in) using the business PAN, address proof and bank details, pay the ₹500 government fee online and sign with a digital signature or Aadhaar OTP. With correct documents the IEC is usually issued within 1 to 3 working days, as an e-certificate you can download.

Key takeaways

  • The IEC number is the same as the business PAN.
  • Government fee: ₹500, paid online.
  • Names must match across PAN, bank document and address proof.
  • Update the IEC every year between 1 April and 30 June.

What documents are needed for an IEC?

You need the business PAN, ID of the proprietor or a partner or director, proof of business address and a cancelled cheque or bank certificate in the business name.

What should you do after getting the IEC?

Set a reminder for the annual update, then get a Class 3 DSC, register on ICEGATE and register your AD Code so you can file shipping bills.
